Views from the Willis Tower SkyDeck

I recorded the video below using my iPhone 4, and set it to some ambient music. The views from the Willis Tower's SkyDeck (103 floors up) are truly majestic, and I hope to go again someday (next time, I'll remember my tripod!).

I will gladly do without the crazy Chicago traffic, though :)

Shedd Aquarium Aquatic Show - Dolphin Show (White-sided Dolphins)

I recorded the following video of the last portion of the aquatic show at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, IL. My wife and I visited the aquarium to see this interesting show of dolphins (the highlight), a couple red-tailed hawks, and sometimes other animals as well.

I highly recommend the show if you're in Chicago!

Willis Tower Perspective

I took this photo from the ground at Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago, IL over the weekend. I also took a bunch of HD videos from the SkyDeck that I'll be putting together into a few minutes of video. Truly a majestic building, and I wonder if we'll ever see something taller in the U.S. Seems our architectural prowess is taking a back seat to the rest of the world lately.

As an aside, if the iPhone 4 takes pictures of this quality, I can't wait to get an iPhone 4S and ditch my Nikon D7000 for many of my trips. While using a 50mm f/1.4 inside in a dim room and still getting nice shots is awesome, having a camera that's always with me and gets 'pretty good' shots is also awesome. I hope to get a 4S soon!

John Hancock Center - Guitar Hero Style

I couldn't pass up this photo op. Foggy nights in downtown Chicago are great!

Guitar Hero Hancock Center

I'm in Chicago for the week for DrupalCon Chicago 2011—it's been a great conference, though the weather's been pretty stiff. Maybe I'll have time to waltz around the city a little more tomorrow evening...

Decline in Church Architecture and Art

These images speak for themselves, but I will offer a few asides to help explain why I was saddened after visiting the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago a few months ago.

Tabernacle - Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago
What... the... I think they might reserve the Body of Christ somewhere in that mess.

Rose Window - Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago
To think that, before the fire, there was probably very beautiful, meaningful and symbolic imagery in that stained glass. Now it's an abstract, and dare I say, boring sight. My eyes grew tired trying to see what was up there.

Pipe Organ - Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago
Amazingly, it seems the beautiful wood ceiling and majestic pipe organ were unharmed by the Cathedral's renovations. However, it seems Spider Man paid a visit to the Cathedral's narthex (the little gathering area in the back with spider webbing).

Sanctuary - Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago
The sanctuary, at first glance looks like it would be able to attract the eyes for a visual treat. However, upon closer inspection, the crucifix is distracting, the stained glass windows are simply a mess (there is seemingly random/patchy colors all over—not even abstract figures), and the altar and sanctuary area is almost completely unadorned.

The general lack of ornamentation in the Cathedral was very disheartening. And what was present was horribly out of place in such a gothic and majestic structure! Some of the best reading I've had on the issue of modern Church renovations and architecture is No Place for God: The Denial of Transcendence in Modern Church Architecture, by Moyra Doorly. This Church should definitely be listed as an exemplar Church for the book!
